My Major and Career Goals
Major: Exercise Science
Certificate: Personal Training
I am majoring in Exercise Science on a pre-physical therapy track. After taking a medical terminology class in high school, I knew I had an interest in working with the human body. Anatomy and physiology have always struck my interest. I gravitated towards the more medical/scientific courses in high school. During my freshman year at IUPUI, I was on a Neuroscience major path. However, something always felt off and I could not pinpoint these feelings of doubt. It was not until I learned about the Exercise Science degree IUPUI offers. This major is a perfect fit for both my passions and my professional goals. I am pleased that this major encompasses a variety of components of health which include: nutrition, sports psychology, biomechanics, kinesiology, and personal training. Being the avid runner I am, I have had a lot of experience working with individuals in the sports medicine world. I believe the work they do to rehabilitate individuals back to functional health is so important. Exercise and physical activity can impact a person beyond the physical benefits. Emotional and psychological states can be greatly influenced by the amount of physical activity an individual participates in. This will impact how efficient they are at their own jobs and in their own lives. By completing the Exercise Science curriculum and taking a national certification exam, I will also become certified in personal training through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. This is another benefit of majoring in Exercise Science. It will allow me to have a job as I complete graduate school while also teaching me real-world experience I will apply in my future area of employment. In a way, by using my Exercise Science degree to pursue a career in physical therapy, I will be able to cause a ripple effect of change in the world!

I currently intend to pursue a career in physical therapy. Specifically, I would like to work in an outpatient clinic assisting patients of all ages. I would also like to use the knowledge gained from my Exercise Science degree to coach cross country and track at either the high school or collegiate level. Through my time being an athlete, I understand the vital role physical therapists play in an individual's life. I am passionate about using my talents to rehabilitate individuals back to functional living and exercise. I would specifically like to specialize with rehabilitating runners. During my time that I have been injured with my femoral and sacral stress fractures, I have been going to St. Vincent's Sports Medicine physical therapy clinic. I was intrigued by all of the equipment and techniques the physical therapists uses. For example, I ran on an anti-gravity treadmill that allowed me to run using only 70% of my body weight. I am fascinated by this type of advanced technology, and was able to gain a first-hand experience on how these tools and techniques directly improve the health of a person. To obtain my career goals, I will first graduate with my Exercise Science major. To do this I will diligently study and become involved in campus opportunities such as research and internships. After graduation, I intend to complete graduate school to obtain my Doctorate of Physical Therapy. From there, I hope to begin working in a clinic at a sports medicine facility, such as St. Vincent's.
